Huntington Businesses May Save Money by Going Green
Posted by JMitty - 5/19/13

Several Huntington councilmen are backing tax rebates for businesses which go green by implementing environmental solutions in the coming years.  Mark Cthubertson and Billii Roberti recently stated at a task meeting of the council that reductions in greenhouse gas emissions could mean lower electricity bills for residents and businesses across Long Island.  How can businesses reduce their emissions and cut their utility costs?  By following the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).  If the proposed tax breaks go into effect, businesses would be able to get cuts for following the ... Plans in the Works for a Long Island Casino
Posted by JMitty - 5/16/13

Owing to strict restrictions on gambling in New York, New Yorkers have to take their gambling business elsewhere, which means that a substantial amount of money leaves the state.  Gambling takes place in New Jersey and other states surrounding New York instead of inside of state lines.  Realizing the economic welfare that a casino could bring to New York, state officials are discussing opening a large casino in Long Island.  Right now the proposal takes the form of a bill which is going before the state legislature.  There is a lot of major support for the bill, and it has a very strong chance of passing. The casino would be constructed on the Nassau-Suffolk county ... Read More »
Repairs Ongoing at Bay Park Sewage Plant
Posted by JMitty - 5/15/13

The Bay Park Sewage Plant gained attention from the press all over New York after spilling more than three million gallons of partially treated sewage into a Nassau waterway.  The accident was blamed on a power outage at the sewage plant, and repairs are still proceeding.  During Hurricane Sandy, more than nine feet of floodwater washed through the building, and right now it is still relying on its backup generators to supply power.  The four main engines which powered the facility before went offline after Sandy destroyed their functionality. The sewage plant has taken a lot of flak since the spill.  “This is a basic human necessity; this is not a luxury ... Read More »

Usdan is the largest day summer school for the arts in the country and this support is going to ensure that they will be able to have the supplies needed, as well as be able to select students for scholarships to the school and cover some transportation costs. The micro grants will be $100 to $400 each and, hopefully, will support approximately fifteen Brentwood students. Usdan Center’s Executive Director said of the grants, “This funding is intended ... Did Zambrano Sign With the Ducks Or Not?
Posted by JMitty - 5/14/13

The other week, reports circulated saying that Carlos Zambrano had signed on with the Long Island Ducks.  As of Monday however, the Atlantic League’s team roster still didn’t list Zambrano.  So did Zambrano sign on with the Ducks or not?  Apparently, the issue is still up in the air.  Zambrano has certainly discussed the possibility of signing with the team, and he did agree to a set of terms, but he has yet to actually put the agreement in writing and sign a contract. What’s the holdup?  Apparently Zambrano is still in talks with several other teams in the major league, apparently the Phillies being at the top of the list.  The Phillies ... Read More »
The Joy of Second Label Wines
Posted by JamesW - 5/14/13

Planning a huge party or barbecue, but not sure how you are going to afford wine for everyone? Second label wines may be the answer to your dilemma. Some Long Island vintners sell second-best wines under what is known as second-label programs and these wines are usually under $20 per bottle, which can be significant savings. While they do not meet the highest standards, they are suitable for casual consumption, which is perfect for barbecues or parties with lots of people. Second label wines are for drinking and, at minimum, they are pleasurable, and are normally not too far off in quality from their superior siblings. Most people equate these second label wines with restaurant carafe ... Read More »

Mold Threatens Long Island Gardens
Posted by JMitty - 5/10/13

For the past couple of years, gardeners on Long Island have been struggling with mold problems.  The watery mold which has taken hold in the soil of so many gardens on the island is particularly deadly to impatiens, one of the most popular annual plants which gardeners can buy.  Impatiens are beautiful, colorful flowers, and are generally a best-seller at garden centers.  This year however, many garden centers are actually displaying signs advising their customers not to bother purchasing impatiens because they will only die once they are planted.  The mold, called downey mildew, remains in the soil for two to three years, which means that mildew which settled in ...
