Fisher-Price Announces Elimination and Moving of Jobs
Posted by EdwardL - 5/23/13

Fisher-Price announced on Wednesday that it is eliminating or moving around 100 jobs. This is part of the restructuring and reorganizing that is being done by parent company, Mattel, Inc. While most of the jobs are being relocated, some have been removed entirely, leaving an unspecified number of people out of work. Most of the jobs will be reassigned to the headquarters in El Segundo, California and these employees have been offered relocation packages. Unfortunately, however, an unspecified number of employees received layoff notices. Most of the employees affected work at the East Aurora headquarters near Buffalo and the rest are in New York City. Employees in toy design and ... Read More »
New Homes Sales Sees Increase In April
Posted by JosephB - 5/23/13

Nationwide, new home sales saw an increase in April and the median price was almost at a record high. This could indicate that the market is recovering, albeit at a slower pace than some would like. The reasons for this increase can be attributed to the near record low mortgage rates and the increase in jobs. Both of these reasons encourage people to buy homes. While sales are still below the healthy market pace, they have risen 29 percent over the last year, which is a huge increase over the last few years. In addition, the median home price is going up quickly simply because there is a limited supply of homes for people to bid on and buy. Credit Suisse economists say that the ... Read More »
Local Graffiti Mecca May be In Danger of Demolition
Posted by CynthiaM - 5/22/13

A luxury housing project is trying to replace world-renowned graffiti mecca 5Pointz. Long Island City artists, however, are trying to block a plan to tear this piece of art down. The internationally known 5Pointz demolition is causing great controversy. G & M Realty wants to build two residential high-rise buildings there, but they will need a change in zoning to do it. A spokeswoman for the graffiti community, Marie Flageul, said, “Anybody involved with 5Pointz feels it’s an asset to the arts community. I hope New Yorkers wake up for once and take arms now instead of mourn later.” The issue is expected to be discussed today. David Wolkoff, president of the ... Read More »

Long Island School Vote Today
Posted by JMitty - 5/21/13

Long Island’s struggling economy took another huge hit last year with Hurricane Sandy, but even before the superstorm struck, one area where the island’s financial woes were already obvious was education. Long Island schools have been subjected to a number of budget cuts over the years, and many services have been outright eliminated in response to the reduced funds available.  Today, Long Islanders are at the polls voting on whether or not to reinstate those services by returning the budgets to the schools.  Voters are currently deciding the financial fate of schools in 124 districts, 56 of which are in Nassau and 68 of which are in Suffolk.  The tax ... Fresh, Local, Sustainable Seafood From Dock to Dish
Posted by JamesW - 5/21/13

The combination of fisherman and restaurateur has created a new niche in the fresh fish market called Dock to Dish. This community sponsored fishing co-operative is allowing people to get back to eating fish the way it was meant to be – freshly caught that day. Rudi Bonicelli, a commercial fisherman, and Sean Barrett, a restaurateur, have been friends and fishing partners for years. Based on Barrett’s experience in Spain where fishermen would bring their fresh haul to the back doors of restaurants to sell, he thought, “We can do that here. We can be the salt water brothers to Farm to Table.” That was the beginning of Dock to Dish. It is a very simply concept ... Read More »

The annual “Buckle Up New York” campaign begins today. It is part of the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign that brings together law enforcement from coast to coast. It goes from May 20 th to June 2 nd and means that there will be additional patrols and seatbelt checkpoints. Suffolk County Police Commissioner, Ed Webber, said, “Fastening your seat belt takes seconds and it can save your life. We have seen first-hand the deadly consequences of what happens when someone chooses not to buckle up.” According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, New York State has a seat belt compliance rate of 90 or better for the past three years. ... Huntington Businesses May Save Money by Going Green
Posted by JMitty - 5/19/13

Several Huntington councilmen are backing tax rebates for businesses which go green by implementing environmental solutions in the coming years.  Mark Cthubertson and Billii Roberti recently stated at a task meeting of the council that reductions in greenhouse gas emissions could mean lower electricity bills for residents and businesses across Long Island.  How can businesses reduce their emissions and cut their utility costs?  By following the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).  If the proposed tax breaks go into effect, businesses would be able to get cuts for following the ... The 25 th Annual Drinking Water Week brought the West Hampstead Water District recognition and a trophy. The winner of the “Best Tasting Water Contest” competition, sponsored by the Long Island Water Conference, beat out 21 other water districts in a blind taste test. The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, Commissioner John Sparacio, said, “This is a wonderful honor. Our people work hard to deliver the best tasting water without interruption. It’s also assuring to know that West Hempstead customers can turn a tap and get the country’s best tasting water at a fraction of the cost of bottled water. Plans in the Works for a Long Island Casino
Posted by JMitty - 5/16/13

Owing to strict restrictions on gambling in New York, New Yorkers have to take their gambling business elsewhere, which means that a substantial amount of money leaves the state.  Gambling takes place in New Jersey and other states surrounding New York instead of inside of state lines.  Realizing the economic welfare that a casino could bring to New York, state officials are discussing opening a large casino in Long Island.  Right now the proposal takes the form of a bill which is going before the state legislature.  There is a lot of major support for the bill, and it has a very strong chance of passing. The casino would be constructed on the Nassau-Suffolk county ... Read More »
Repairs Ongoing at Bay Park Sewage Plant
Posted by JMitty - 5/15/13

The Bay Park Sewage Plant gained attention from the press all over New York after spilling more than three million gallons of partially treated sewage into a Nassau waterway.  The accident was blamed on a power outage at the sewage plant, and repairs are still proceeding.  During Hurricane Sandy, more than nine feet of floodwater washed through the building, and right now it is still relying on its backup generators to supply power.  The four main engines which powered the facility before went offline after Sandy destroyed their functionality. The sewage plant has taken a lot of flak since the spill.  “This is a basic human necessity; this is not a luxury ... Read More »
