New York, NY - July 17, 2014 - By earning “top rankings” in six out of 16 medical specialties, The Mount Sinai Hospital achieved “Honor Roll” status in this year’s U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” guidebook.

Another Mount Sinai Health System hospital to be ranked nationally in 2014 was the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (No. 10 in Ophthalmology). Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, and Mount Sinai Roosevelt were ranked regionally.

"We are proud of our U.S. News rankings as we are committed to innovative medicine and a team approach to personalized patient care," said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, CEO and President of the Mount Sinai Health System. "In this changing health care landscape, Mount Sinai continues to provide coordinated care to ensure the highest quality outcomes for our patients. We are also dedicated to developing groundbreaking therapies and treatments, and we continue to recruit and retain top physicians, researchers, and medical staff."

U.S. News ranks the nation’s best hospitals annually, and Mount Sinai ranked 16th on the list of the top 17 honor roll hospitals in the United States this year.

The Mount Sinai Hospital ranked in the top ten in four of the 16 specialties measured: Geriatrics (No. 2), Gastroenterology and GI surgery (No. 9), Ear, Nose & Throat (Otolaryngology, No. 10), and Cardiology & Heart Surgery (No. 10). Mount Sinai’s departments of Rehabilitation Medicine (No. 14), Neurology & Neurosurgery (No. 15), and Diabetes & Endocrinology (No. 17) were ranked in the top 20 nationwide. The Hospital was also recognized as “high-performing” in Gynecology, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, and Pulmonology.

“Mount Sinai has a legacy of groundbreaking scientific discoveries that has led to improved methods of diagnosing and treating human disease,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System. “Presently, we are recruiting outstanding physicians and scientists to literally every Department and Institute, thus ensuring that we will continue to be at the cutting edge of biomedical science and clinical excellence.”

Reich, MD, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Horace W. Goldsmith Professor of Anesthesiology, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “Their efforts have translated into these exemplary rankings in U.S. News, and I remain confident that our staff will see to it that Mount Sinai and our entire Health System are held in such high regard for years to come.”

About the US News Best Hospitals Issue
This year’s Best Hospitals showcases more than 720 of the nation’s roughly 5,000 hospitals. In arriving at its rankings for 12 specialties, U.S. News & World Report evaluated each institution's reputation, mortality index, patient safety record, discharges, and other care-related factors, including nursing and technology. The rankings for four specialties, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, and Rheumatology were based on reputation alone, and reflect a three-year running average. To earn Honor Roll status, a hospital must have a combination of at least 6 top rankings within the top 20 of the data-driven specialties, or from top 10 in the reputation only specialties.
