Stephen Labate Comments on this Year’s Tax Day

As all of us file and pay our taxes this year, there is one thing on which many Americans can find common ground - we all are being taxed way too much.

Stephen Labate noted, “if you are feeling the pain of writing a check to the Government this year, just wait until next year when we are dealing with Taxmageddon,” a term used by Ezra Klein of the Washington Post.  “The taxes of 2013 will not only affect the affluent, but they will also strike at the heart of middle and low-income Americans.”

Labate, a Republican seeking to challenge Congressman Steve Israel, a six-term incumbent, pointed out that “Americans will face these taxes due to incumbents, like Congressman Steve Israel.  Congressman Israelis known to say he supports lower taxes, but his voting record contradicts his rhetoric”.

Labate noted that next year, “the child tax credit will be reduced by 50%, the American Opportunity Tax Credit for college tuition will be eliminated and 44% of taxpayers with three or more children will be subject to the Alternate Minimum Tax (AMT).  In addition, there will be a significant reduction in the number of those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, the 10% tax bracket will be eliminated and the death tax will increase to 55%”.

The candidate criticized Steve Israel’s voting record on taxes saying, “CongressmanIsraelhas consistently received an F rating from the non-partisan National Taxpayers Union (NTU) and, in recent years, has ranked in the bottom 2-7% of all members of Congress”.

Stephen Labate went on to pledge to the constituents of the 3rd Congressional District, “I make this promise to you, I will fight to reform the onerous tax code and I will never vote to raise your taxes.  The business community and constituents of CD-3 are crying for real tax and regulatory relief to jump start our anemic economy.  Long Islanders are ready to send a representative to Washington who will offer and support pro-growth policies which will get Long Island’s economy back on the road to prosperity.”
