St. Catherine's Hosted Ladies Night Out: The Latest Advances in Women's Health

John Mitty Thursday, May 23, 2013

St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center hosted its first ever Ladies Night Out on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Long Island Sheraton in Smithtown. The evening was moderated by Dara Brener, MD, an internist and staff physician at St. Catherine, with a special keynote address from News 12 Long Island Health Reporter Shari Einhorn, who stressed the importance of women taking time to care for themselves first, especially when it concerns their health.

Also in attendance to welcome the “ladies” was Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Catholic Health Services Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO, who also shared his perspective as an emergency department physician and the significance of preventative wellness. “Take time for yourself first to prevent disease by taking the time to see your primary care physician on a routine basis,” commented Dr. O’Shaughnessy.

Ladies Night Out is an outgrowth of St. Catherine’s Community Outreach Program, Welcome to Wellness—a free informative health lecture series. Previous topics included heart health, digestive wellness and allergies and asthma. The free event consisted of a multidisciplinary panel of expert physicians who discussed common issues and advances in women’s health, including Lisa Amorin, MD (obstetrics, gynecology and robotic surgery), John D. Angstadt, MD (general and bariatric surgery), Dara Brener, MD (latest vaccinations recommendations), Sandra Iannotti, MD (orthopedics), Nick Gabriel, DO (advanced laparoscopic, general,  bariatric and robotic surgery); June Lee, MD (breast surgery),Daniel Schwartz, MD (general and thoracic surgery), Paul Savoca, MD (general, colorectal and robotic surgery) and Diana Yoon-Schwartz, MD (plastic and reconstructive surgery).

Attendees had the unique opportunity to ask the panelist questions and test the da Vinci® Surgical System. St. Catherine’s offers a minimally invasive robotic surgery program, which equips physicians with advanced technology that offers many patient benefits, including faster recovery, less post-surgical pain and reduced risk of complications. St. Catherine now offers robotic options in the following areas: bariatric, general surgery, urology, colon/rectal and gynecology.

In addition to the panel of expert physicians and live demonstrations of the  da Vinci® Surgical System, “ladies” in attendance received a free dinner and giveaways, as well as raffle door prizes which were donated by Elements Massage of Smithtown, Baja Grill of Smithton, Smithtown Beauty Supply and Salon and Cactus Salon and Spa.

Smithtown Chamber Executive Director Barbara Franco commented on the event, “This women’s seminar was an informative evening from an elite group of diversified medical specialist. I was very excited to attend and learn about the many subjects on women’s health—on all levels. She added, “I look forward to future invitations from St. Catherine of Siena as they continue to keep the community informed and updated on the latest advances.”
