St. Catherine Offers Free, New Support Group for Caregivers with Dementia

Smithtown, New York—Caring for a loved one with dementia can be challenging for families and caregivers. People with dementia from conditions such as Alzheimer’s and related diseases have a progressive brain disorder that makes it more and more difficult for them to remember things, think clearly, communicate with others, or take care of themselves. In addition, dementia can cause mood swings and even change a person’s personality and behavior. All these factors can make caring for a loved one suffering from dementia very difficult.

St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center recognizes that caring for a loved one with dementia can be overwhelming and is proud to offer its new and free support group, Caregivers of People with Dementia. The friendly environment will offer caregivers the opportunity to get supportive resources, hear how others are coping and share their own experiences. Some topics will include, “Knowledge of what to expect at different stages”, “Care giving for the Caregiver” and “What helps a person with dementia and what does not”.

“Giving the increasing number of patients suffering from dementia, St. Catherine’s is always striving to meet the changes of the community and has decided to offer this free support group for caregivers, who will benefit from this friendly meeting place,” said St. Catherine’s Assistant Vice President for Performance Improvement Marie Thayer.

The free support group will meet the fourth Thursday of the month, beginning March 28, 2013; from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Meetings will be held at St. Catherine’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Care Center, located at 52 Route 25A, Smithtown, New York, in the lower level recreation room.
