Senator LaValle Opens Forum for Common Core on Nov 26

On November 12^th, more than 1,500 people packed an auditorium with a 900-seat limit to protest the state’s Common Core curriculum and testing procedures.  The crowd booed Education Commissioner John King Jr. as he spoke, and cheered loudly when others spoke out against the system.  King will be hosting another discussion forum at Eastport/South Manor High School from 6 to 8 pm on November 26th.  In an attempt to prevent a repeat of November 12^th’s chaos, State Senator Ken LaValle has forwarded a letter to the superintendents of local schools.

The letter requests that the superintendents meet up with parents, teachers, students and parents who are concerned about the Common Core Curriculum.  Superintendents are to record questions and comments of speakers as well as their names and send them in by November 21^st.  Each statement must be kept under two minutes, and statements which are considered to be duplicates will be passed over.  Only one question will be taken from each district, and the 1,000 seat capacity of the auditorium will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Additional seating in an overflow room will be available.  In the overflow room, attendees will be able to watch events via closed circuit television.  Speakers who are chosen to present will have seats reserved for them in advance.
