Seatuck Launches "Tributary Project"

John Mitty Wednesday, March 15, 2017

March 14, 2017 - Islip, NY - The Seatuck Environmental Association will launch its newest wildlife conservation effort, The River Revival Project, on Wednesday March 15th with the Long Island premiere of the award-winning documentary, "DamNation."

Wednesday, March 15
Doors: 6:30 pm
Program: 7:00 pm
Reception: 8:30 - 10:00 pm

Screening will be at YMCA Boulton Center in Bay Shore.

After the movie, Enrico Nardone, Executive Director, will introduce Seatuck's new program and explain how citizens can get involved in restoring Long Island tributaries and migratory fish.

The River Revival Project is an island-wide strategy to restore the ecological health of the more than 120 rivers and streams across Long Island. An important component is the restoration of the region's populations of migratory fish - river herring, American eel and brook trout - which depend on access to freshwater and play a critical role in our coastal ecosystem. The River Revival Project maps out the island's many tributaries and identifies places where dams, culverts and other barriers prevent these important fish from reaching necessary fresh water habitat. The project's goal is to restore the region's coastal tributaries - and the species that rely on them - to their proper role as a key component of our coastal ecosystem.

The movie "DamNation" is award-winning documentary from Patagonia, Inc. about the impacts of dams and the efforts underway around the country to restore rivers. The work is analogous to Seatuck's effort on Long Island.
