Save-A-Pet Launches “K911” Program

New Initiative Will Help Rescue Dogs from High-Kill Shelters

(Port Jefferson Station, NY) — Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. has recently announced the launch of its new “K911” program, which is aimed at rescuing the most at-risk dogs from kill shelters. In the past, many of these dogs would have been euthanized due to age or medical conditions that would preclude them from being adopted. The program came to fruition after Save-A-Pet received a $5,000 grant from Best Friends Animal Society’s No More Homeless Pets^®.

“This initiative is one that is very near and dear to my heart,” says Save-A-Pet Founder/President Dori Scofield. “Save-A-Pet’s mission has always been to help the ‘underdogs’ of the world and we’re very grateful for the seed money we received from Best Friends Animal Society, which will allow us to give deserving dogs an opportunity for a new leash on life!”

Ms. Scofield stresses that while some of the dogs will need lifelong care due to medical issues, most are adoptable with the help of medical intervention. Toto is a perfect example of a K911 candidate. Save-A-Pet was recently contacted by New York City Animal Care & Control about the 16-year-old male Cairn Terrier with cataracts. Save-A-Pet will do a complete medical evaluation on him, including blood work and X-rays.

“We don’t know much about this little, stray waif,” says Ms. Scofield. “But the NYC ACC felt strongly enough about his personality to reach out to us to see if he could be a candidate for the program. He’s an absolute sweetheart and deserves to live out his remaining days in a loving home.”
