PSEG Adding 100MW of Solar Power to Long Island's Grid

PSEG Long Island will be constructing solar generators across Long Island in an effort to produce greener, more cost-effective power for local residents and businesses.  The program is known as the Clean Solar Initiative, and is the second of its kind.  Once constructed, the solar panels will generate an additional 100MW.  The panels will provide power to Nassau and Suffolk counties as well as Brooklyn and Queens. 

PSEG received 178 different proposals from contractors to construct the solar panels.  The final bid price was locked in at $0.1688 per kilowatt hour.  Speaking about the outcome of the auction for contracts, Michael Voltz, director of Energy Efficiency and Renewables for PSEG Long Island, stated, “These auction results have yielded a price for solar energy almost 25 percent below the price being paid for the first feed-in-tarrif on Long Island, for a savings of $8.1 million per year.”  The power generated will be enough to support 13,000 homes.  The project to erect the photovoltaic systems will create hundreds of jobs and provide renewable energy for at least two decades.  The project will not only drive down the costs of power on Long Island overall, but will also lead to more cost-effective solar solutions, making green, renewable energy solutions more obtainable.
