Pet Valu Honors Our Four-Legged Veterans

John Mitty Friday, July 25, 2014

New York, NY - July 25, 2014 - No one who has worked with the canine members of the Armed Forces will ever deny that they are true heroes, selfless, brave and loyal. They are often the first line of defense against danger and are true best friends and guardians to our service men and women.

In 2010, Pet Valu learned about the U.S. War Dog Association (USWDA) and all that they do. With countless stories testifying to the heroic efforts of the canine troops and the awe inspiring relationships these dogs have with their handlers, Pet Valu knew that they had to get involved. Every summer since 2010, Pet Valu pledges to support the Burlington, NJ-based US War Dogs Association (USWDA), a nonprofit organization committed to promoting the history of military service dogs, establishing permanent war dog memorials, providing support to war dogs and their handlers, and serving as a clearinghouse for retired dog adoptions across America.

Beginning July 4 through September 11, 2014, Pet Valu will be selling themed products with all proceeds going to the USWDA. Pick up a U.S. flag bandana for your pet to sport this summer for only $5. Or, make a contribution of any denomination on a "paper paw" in memory of or for a current four legged friend at any Pet Valu location. One hundred percent of the donations collected will go to support the US War Dogs Association. Since partnering with the USWDA, Pet Valu has raised over $200,000 and is especially proud to have received the Seven Seals Award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve in October 2012.

There is a great need in supporting the military working dogs and their handlers in the Middle East and other locations around the world. Due to military cutbacks, many of the war dog teams are in need of many items that are not being replenished by the military. Your generous contributions helps the USWDA send out hundreds of packages for the dogs including cooling vests, boots and "doggles," fund transportation back to the U.S. after their service is complete, and facilitate adoptions to find these veteran war dogs forever homes with loving owners. USWDA has also started a free Rx Program to help the adopted parents of the retired war dogs with their medical prescriptions. The plan cover prescriptions and items, such as dog wheelchairs.

Ron Aiello, founder and president of the USWDA says, “We’re especially happy about the support Pet Valu has given us. Because of their generosity, we were able to upgrade the quality of the products we send to our dog teams.” Join Pet Valu and help support some of the most loyal and intricate members of the armed forces.
