One of the concerns for New Yorkers this past year was the kindergarten offerings and structure. That seems like it has been taken care of recently. The Alliance for Quality Education joined with the Ready for Kindergarten, Ready for College Campaign in praising the new New York Education Reform Commission for recommending the expansion of quality pre-kindergarten programs through the creation of a statewide full day pre-kindergarten program.
This is the first recommendation of its kind and is to focus on quality programming, with a full day structure. While there are many who believe a full day for pre-k children may be too much for them to handle, it is clear that the commission believes this will help young minds develop and absorb information. A full-day Pre-K program would build on the successful statewide Pre-K initiative created under the leadership of Speaker Sheldon Silver and the New York State Assembly.
Billy Easton, Executive Director, Alliance for Quality Education said, “Governor Cuomo’s Education Commission deserves recognition for making the expansion of quality Pre-K a centerpiece of their recommendations, targeting this to high need school districts, and recognizing the success of full-day Pre-K programs. Clearly the testimony of early childhood education advocates made a difference.”
Education in New York, especially Long Island, has taken quite a hit at the end of 2012 with Hurricane Sandy. However, things are beginning to look up for the schools, and the children, as donations pour in, help comes from out of state, and now a look to the future for our smaller children, there is a lot to be looking forward to as far as education goes.
