New Type of Bars and Restaurants Sprouting on Long Island

Wendy L Wednesday, August 22, 2012

If you’re looking for a different type of dining and drinking experience on Long Island, you’re in luck! Let’s give the German way a try! Several new German restaurants and bars have been sprouting up on Long Island. Check these places out for your next dining experience or night out for drinks.

  • Prost Grill & Garten is an authentic German bier haus and restaurant in Garden City. Its weekend special includes traditional German marinated beef. Other German specialties include sausages served on a bakers roll. Find dishes on its menu such as Chicken Apple Sausage, Alligator, Munich Chicken Cordon Bleu, Wiener Schnitzel (traditional thin-cut breaded veal loin, served with lemon, potato dumplings and glazed carrots), Bavarian Charcuterie Platter (a plate full of Bavarian meats, garnished with black bread) and much more. Then, there’s the beer menu that’s complete with German drafts and bottles. You can also find import drafts from Ireland, Belgium and Czech Republic.

  • Zum Schneider in Montauk is described as a Bavarian Indoor biergarten. For those who do not speak German, biergarten literally means beer garden – an open airy place for drinks. In this case, we’re talking about something similar to a Bavarian beer hall. Stop by to enjoy good old German beer. It also has an offering of cocktails, spirits and champagne. This is all paired with live music entertainment on Wednesday nights and live DJ spinning on Saturday’s. Its menu features dishes such as Szegediner mit Jakobs Muscheln (pan seared local scallops over potatoes and sauerkraut), Wurstplatte (3 different boiled Bavarian sausages with sauerkraut and potato salad), Graf Lachs (Montauk bass marinated in smoked beer with horseradish cream), Schweinebraten (roasted pork shoulder in a dark beer gravy with potato dumpling and Bavarian salads) and more.

“Prost!” – as Germans would say for “Cheers!” – to good German food and beer on Long Island.

Come back each week for new features on entertainment, shopping and dining opportunities on Long Island. Also, if you have any suggestions on hot spots on Long Island, please let us know.
