Nefcu to “Pay It Forward” All Summer Long

John Mitty Friday, July 11, 2014

Westbury, NY - July 8, 2014 - That cup of coffee in Commack? It’s on us. That tank of gas in Greenvale? We’ll take care of it. That meal in Massapequa? Let us get that for you. All summer long, NEFCU will “Pay It Forward” by picking up the tab, doing a good deed or lending a helping hand to hundreds of unsuspecting Long Islanders.

The credit union’s munificence is the centerpiece of its “Pay It Forward Fridays” program that will occur every Friday in various towns throughout Long Island. From July 11 to September 19, the Long Island credit union will send out local branch employees into the community to the surprise and delight of Long Islanders, who will find that a NEFCU employee has bought them lunch, paid for their gas, carried their groceries to the car, or simply brightened their day with a neighborly gesture.

In addition to the weekly good deeds and generous acts, NEFCU will be paying it forward in a big way by helping three Long Islanders in need. Throughout the summer three deserving long Islanders will receive up to $1, 500 in assistance, NEFCU is asking Long Islanders to help it identify those three people or families who would benefit most from the larger donations by nominating a friend, neighbor, relative or co-worker at www.mynefcu.org.

“Every Friday this summer, we’ll be looking to bring a smile to hundreds of Long Islanders’ faces and show them the power of ‘paying it forward,’” said Edward Paternostro, president of NEFCU. “This is an exciting and enjoyable program for everybody involved as we go deep into the community - and deep into our pockets - to bring a little happiness and assistance to our neighbors.”

The program kicks off July11 in Commack. Throughout the day, local NEFCU branch employees will be out in the community, looking for opportunities to “Pay It Forward,” whether it’s bringing meals to a senior center, providing balls to children in a town park, or buying a late-running commuter a train ticket.

NEFCU’s “Pay It Forward Fridays” team will also be handing passers-by envelopes stuffed with a $5 bill in the hope that they, too, will use the money to brighten the lives of a stranger.

Following the Commack debut, the promotion moves to the following communities on successive Fridays: Valley Stream, Syosset, Massapequa, Franklin Square, Wantagh, Rockville Centre, Greenvale, New Hyde Park, Westbury and Plainview.

For the three people or families selected to receive the large donations from NEFCU, each will be handed a check on a different Friday at a local NEFCU branch.

“We’ll be looking to do so many little things that make a difference in the lives of our neighbors, but in three instances this summer, we hope to provide a little bit of hope for those who could use a helping hand or some assistance amidst some difficult times,” said Mr. Paternostro.
