Maritime Heritage of the North Fork: highight of Long Island’s first island-wide multi-venue arts festival, Arts Alive Long Island

Signature Series Event of Arts Alive Long Island includes juried maritime inspired art exhibit and opening reception at Brecknock Hall Oct. 18

GREENPORT, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2012) – Mark your calendars to take in Maritime Heritage of the North Fork, a Signature Series Event of Arts Alive Long Island that will run throughout October from Riverhead to Orient. To highlight the arts across Long Island, a collaborative of North Fork organizations will host arts, cultural and community events or programs with themes celebrating Long Island’s maritime past, present and future.

Peconic Landing and Brecknock Hall join East End Arts and East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation as leading partners presenting the monthlong Maritime Heritage of the North Fork festival in conjunction with sponsor Sea Tow. The full Arts Alive Long Island Signature Series Event schedule can be found by visiting www.artsaliveli.org orwww.eastendarts.org. Events include the following:

A juried exhibit, “Maritime Inspired Art,” will open at Brecknock Hall Oct. 18. The public is invited to a free reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The show will feature 28 pieces selected from 93 submitted by 33 artists. One of the judges is Peconic Landing resident Vivian Sheehan, originally from Sag Harbor. Judges will choose a “Best in Show” piece, and viewers of the exhibit will have an opportunity to cast a ballot for their favorite piece to win the “People’s Choice” award. A third piece will be selected to grace the 2013 East End Seaport Festival poster. The show will be open for public viewing on the weekends of Oct. 20-21 and Oct. 27-28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Songs of the Sea: The Lesser Known World of Shanties and Focsle Songs will follow the Maritime Inspired Art reception at Brecknock Hall on Oct. 18 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Frank Hendricks, a member of Stout and the New York Packet, has been singing sea shanties at South Street Seaport since the 1970s. He will perform shanties and will discuss their meaning and usage by sailors aboard ship. Donations will be accepted for this presentation that is part of East End Arts' Third Thursday Series.

A History of Coastal Rescue Craft and their Local Designer, Greenport Native Frederick C. Beebe, will be presented by nationally acclaimed author Retired Commander Timothy R. Dring (USNR) on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Peconic Landing Community Center. Greenport native Frederick C. Beebe designed rescue surf boats in a period of American history that straddles the transition from oar and sail power to motorized propulsion. He owned one of the most successful Greenport businesses of his era and helped put the boat building community on the map. This is a free event that is part of the Brecknock Hall Foundation Distinguished Lecture Series. Reservations can be made by calling (631)477-BLUE.

Debuting during October – National Arts and Humanities Month – to showcase Long Island’s world-class arts and culture, Arts Alive Long Island is presented by the Long Island Arts Alliance and Bethpage Federal Credit Union with additional support from the Long Island Community Foundation, media partner WNET/WLIW and transportation partner, the Long Island Railroad.
