Man Prepares for Atlantic Ocean Crossing

Victor Mooney has been doing a lot of rowing in the waters around Long Island.  Mooney is preparing for his fourth attempt to row clear across the Atlantic Ocean, and has been practicing in the area.  “The sea trials are allowing me to row non-stop four to six hours,” he explained, and added that the weather has been conducive to his rowing in the waters around Long Island. 

Mooney’s rowboat is named the Spirit of Malabo, and was constructed in Brazil to careful specifications.  The boat received a special certification from the Brazilian Navy, declaring it seaworthy for an Atlantic crossing.  The first sea trials were conducted from the SUNY MaritimeCollege, and additional trials will include Orient Point to the Shinnecock Canal.  The five-thousand mile journey across the Atlantic will start in Las Palmas, Canary, and will conclude at the Brooklyn Bridge, and include a single stop for supplies in the British Virgin Islands.  Mooney has a number of corporate backers; his voyage across the Atlantic will help raise money and awareness for two causes: AIDS research and testing, and a permanent United Nations memorial for the victims of the transatlantic slave trade at the Skyport Marina in New York.
