Long Islanders Line Up for Free Pets

This Christmas Eve, the North Shore Animal League America headquarters in Port Washington announced that all pet adoptions would be free.  So yesterday, hundreds of Long Islanders got in line to give a new pet a home.  “We lost our family dog a few months ago,” explained Tammy Mink to CBS Local.  “It’s a Christmas gift to our kids because they miss the dog.”  At the start of the day, 350 animals were in the shelter in need of homes.  “Ideally, I’d like to have them all go home,” stated Lindsey Calabrese of the North Shore Animal League America.

The North Shore Animal League America organization rescues animals not just from Long Island, but from puppy mills and other locations around the country.  “A lot of them are from municipal shelters that escape the risk of euthanasia from coming up here to the North Shore in Port Washington,” explained Calabrese.  The free adoption event is over now, but the rescue organization says there will be plenty of chances for free and paid adoptions next year.  Each year, they rescue more than 20,000 animals from death, abandonment, and maltreatment, and help them to find loving homes on Long Island.
