Long Island School Helped By Volunteer Center Book and School Drive

Janet Joyce Tuesday, January 8, 2013

When it comes to helping out there are several organizations whose passion is to serve by rallying people behind a great cause. This is the case with the upcoming book drive set up by the Long Island Volunteer Center. The Long Island Volunteer Center is hosting a week-long Book and School Supply Drive at the Long Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters Volunteer Recovery Center located at 175 Central Avenue South in Bethpage. Donations will be accepted from Saturday, January 19 to Friday, January 25 between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. The Drive commemorates MLK Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Donations of new books and basic school supplies are needed by local school districts on the South Shore of Long Island impacted by Super Storm Sandy. In addition to the drop off location, The Long Beach School District has created a Wish List of needed items on Amazon.com. These books will go directly to the schools to help them rebuild from the damage left by the storm.

As we get farther and farther away from the day that the storm happened, it is easy for the rest of the world to forget the struggles that are ongoing along Long Island. This is very prominent in the school districts throughout the communities. Supplies, books, resources, and rebuilding are all needed. While there has been help allocated to the school districts by FEMA and the state of New York, there is still a large gap between what is needed and what has been given.

Volunteering is a great way to not only be involved with the school, but also to help these schools become solid educational beacons for the children that attend them.
