Long Island Cycling Group Helps Count Trail Use in New York State

Cynthia Marie Wednesday, September 5, 2012

As events happen in, and around, Long Island it is nice to see the community come out to support each one. During the month of August, the Concerned Long island Mountain Bicyclists have engaged in an activity to count users on the trails around New York state. This all started when the non-profit group Parks & Trails New York began working with the New York State Trails Council and state Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation in an intitiative to count the number of people using the trails around the state.

This counting is a project to show the importance of the trails, as well a the importance of getting out and riding bikes around the state. The CLIMB group has gone out during the month of August and counted the number of bikers along three different segments of trails. These three segments consist of the Bethpage Bike Path in Bethpage, the southern segment of the Bethpage Bike path in Massapequa Park, and the Jones Beach Bike Path in Wantagh.

Speaking on the reason for  CLIMB's involvement, president Michael Vitti of Glen Head said, "It is to make the case of making more trails." The group used six volunteers throughout weekends and weekday evenings to conduct two hour counts four different times. For their work they counted numbers as high as 627 on the Bethpage trail. It looks like mountain biking is alive and well in New York. Find a trail near you and set out. It is great exercise for the entire family.
