LIRR to Launch New Service

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is adding a new “scoot” train service.  The “scoot” trains will offer faster and more regular rides between Brooklyn, Jamaica, Oyster Bay, Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, and will launch with East Side Access in 2019.  The idea is for the trains to be faster and offer a more prompt and predictable service to commuters who avoid public transit because of delays.  LIRR President Helena Wiliams explained, “The benefit is to our riders who say, ‘Gee, I could leave my car at home if I knew there was a train that I could catch, but if I have to wait two hours, I don’t want to wait for a train, I’ll take my car.’” 

According to Williams, as many as 20,000 riders could benefit from the addition of “scoot” trains to LIRR’s services.  After the scoot trains are implemented at the locations above, LIRR may also consider offering scoot services between Port Jefferson and Huntington.  “It’s a very bright future for the Long Island Rail Road with increased service opportunities for our customers,” added Williams.  Unfortunately in the meanwhile, commuters will have to continue to deal with long wait times or the cost of driving to work in their cars.
