LI Men Rented, Sold Cars to Customers

Three Long Island men have just been busted by authorities for renting cars and then selling them instead of returning them, for a fraction of their true value.  The scheme worked as follows:  One of the men created fake ID cards, driver’s licenses, and credit cards, and then the team used them to rent new and late-model cars.  One 2013 Cadillac CTS sedan worth around $41,000 was sold for $2,100.  The trio stole cars from Spota, Avis and Hertz.  Authorities still do not know how many were stolen, and the rental companies only realized something was wrong after the cars had been sold. 

Right now, there is no information as to what will happen to the stolen and resold cars themselves, or the customers who purchased them (unwittingly or in full knowledge that they were hot).  The 23 year old Bay Shore resident who created the fake IDs did so at his parents’ house in Lindenhurst, along with fake credit cards through the use of a Tipper Machine.  The materials were confiscated, and while the man has been charged, his parents have not been.  The sentences for the three men have not yet been announced.  A fourth man from Holbrook was also charged and arrested during the investigation, not for fraud, counterfeit, or theft, but for selling pot.
