Stephen Labate Responds to Congressman Israel’s Claim that, “Medicare is not going Bankrupt”

Taking note of CongressmanIsrael's recent appearance on CNBC, Stephen Labate comments on his statement that "Medicare is not going bankrupt". "I don’t know how he can say such a thing with a straight face", Labate said. “The Congressional Budget Office clearly shows that the Medicare Trust Fund is running a deficit, and that it will continue to do so, growing to astronomical proportions by 2022”.

As seen in the video below even the seasoned hosts on CNBC were clearly taken aback at Congressman Israel’s bizarre comments.

Labate, a Republican running inNew York’s new CD-3 to challengeIsrael, a six-term incumbent, went on to say, “the CBO latest report clearly shows that the Medicare Trust Fund will be depleted to zero during the 2013-2022 period.  Politicians have been using budget tricks to hide that fact, but they just can’t hide it anymore.”

The challenger continued, “I can't believe how CongressmanIsraelcould say, “don't take my word for it listen to the congressional budget office”, when it is the Congressional Budget Office that refutes everything he said during the interview”.

Mr.Israel’s stance is further complicated by the fact that the Obama health care law, which Congressman Israel championed, reduces Medicare funding by $575 billion at a time when 30% more people will enter the program. Mr. Labate went on to say, “The fact is, there is nothing CongressmanIsraelhas done to help Medicare and, in fact, one could argue that he has made it worse”.

Labate concluded that “Long Islanders have come to recognize the hollow words of incumbents like Steve Israel who claim to be the champion of the middle class and senior citizens but when the rubber meets the road they do the total opposite in Washington”.
