High School Students Artwork Presented at Huntington Arts Council's "High Arts Showcase VIII"

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS' ARTWORK PRESENTED AT THE HUNTINGTON ARTS COUNCIL's "HIGH ARTS SHOWCASE VIII"

Huntington, NY (April 23, 2012) -- The Huntington Arts Council will showcase the artwork of the regions' 11^th and 12^th grade students who participate in the Council's Arts in Education Journey Program. The annual exhibit, "The High Arts Showcase VIII," features a variety of art media and runs from May 2-29, 2012, with an opening reception on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. -7:00 p.m. at the Art-trium Gallery located at 24 Melville Park Rd., Melville, NY 11747. The Huntington High School String Quartet will perform at the opening. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., and Saturday 8:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m.

Participating high schools include Commack, Harborfields, Huntington, North Babylon, Northport/East Northport, Plainview/Old Bethpage, and South Huntington. The Journey Program faculty from each high school selects the artwork for the exhibition, which this year is sponsored in part by J. De Sena & Associates.

"Each year, there is great interest and excitement around the caliber of work from these talented young artists, and this event honors and celebrates the students, the quality of the art program and the excellence of the faculty at each school." explained Huntington Arts Council Executive Director Diana J. Cherryholmes.

Founded in 1963, the Huntington Arts Council is a not-for-profit organization that enriches the quality of life of Long Islanders with programs and services that address the needs and interests of artists, cultural organizations and the community. The Council’s programs reach over one million Long Island residents, and the Journey Program is a multi-cultural arts-in-education program that is a result of how the schools, artists and the Council cooperate to identify the most enriching artist, teacher and student educational experience for each school. The Journey Program reaches over 36,000 students.

The Huntington Arts Council has been designated a "Primary Institution" by the New York State Council on the Arts, a title meaning "vital to the cultural life of New York State.” The Council is the official arts coordinating agency for the Town of Huntington, and serves as the primary regranting agency on Long Island for the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), in addition to its services to over 600 member cultural organizations and individual artist members. Programs are made possible in part by funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Town of Huntington, the County of Suffolk, the Suffolk County Delegation of the New York State Senate and Assembly, JP Morgan Chase, corporations, foundations and individuals.
