Hempstead Store Owner Steals Million Dollar Lottery Ticket

A convenience store owner and his son in Hempstead have been charged with grand larceny after cheating a customer out of a $1 million winning lottery ticket.  On Thursday, a 34 year old Hispanic man who spoke limited English bought a $10 “Unwrap the Cash” scratch-off card at Peninsula Deli & Grocery.  He handed his winning card to Karim Jaghab, 26, son of the deli’s owner, Nabil Jaghab, 57.  Upon scanning the ticket, Karim confirmed that the customer had won, but decided not to return the ticket with the claim receipt.

Instead, he told the customer he had won $1,000, and paid him from the cash drawer, retaining the ticket.  Realizing he might have been duped, the customer returned to the store, and demanded to know how much he had really won.  The clerk offered him $10,000 as a bribe for his silence, claiming this was the real amount of the winnings.  Now increasingly certain he had been robbed, the victim called the authorities.  Police discovered the clerk and his son attempted to claim the prize from the New York State Lottery Office themselves.  There is no word yet on when the victim will be able to claim the million dollar prize from the lottery office.
