The 2012 Cultural Arts Workshops for Teachers 

HUNTINGTON, NY - Calling all teachers and community educators!  Sign up today for the 2012 Cultural Arts Workshops, a great opportunity to earn in-service credit or Professional Development hours while enhancing your curriculum with diverse cultural experiences sure to engage your students.  The Huntington Arts Council is proud to present this year's workshops:

  • "Hip-Hop – A Tool for Literacy" featuring Linda H. Humes, founder of Yaffa Cultural Arts, Inc. and Adjunct Lecturer, John Jay College, NYC
  • "Enduring Indian Traditions – from Ancient Times to Bollywood" featuring Dr. Rohini Ramanathan, the Founder/Director of India Heritage Institute of LI and Founder/LeadSinger/Director of the East-West World Music Ephihany
  • "Steelpan Drum – Dissent to Cultural Identity" featuring Musician Rudyard Crichlow
  • "Brush Painting Traditions from Asia" – featuring Sung-Sook Setton, established artist and college instructor
  • "Tamara and the Shadow Theatre of Java" – featuring Tamara Fielding, Shadow Master of Javanese Wayang Kulit puppet theatre

Workshops are held every Wednesday from October 3 – Nov 7th (except Oct. 31st) from 4:30-7:30pm at the Huntington High School – 188 Oakwood Road, Huntington NY, 11743.  Come to one or all five!

The Huntington Arts Council presents this series as a component of the JOURNEY multi-cultural arts-in-education program, in partnership with the school districts of Commack, HarborfieldsHuntington, North Babylon, Northport/East Northport, Plainview/Old Bethpage and South Huntington.  Workshops are FREE for teachers in these partner districts.  There is a $15 fee per workshop for all others.   Please note workshop selections are subject to change.

The Huntington Arts Council established the Journey Program 27 years ago as a means of integrating cultural arts into the school curriculum. Journey is a multi-cultural arts-in-education program developed by the Huntington Arts Council in partnership with school districts. The goal of Journey is to foster the appreciation of cultural diversity through the arts.  The 2012 Cultural Arts Workshops for Teachers series is sponsored in part by Target, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Town of Huntington, NYSCA and is proud to have been selected to be part of the inaugural signature series of Arts Alive LI.

The Huntington Arts Council is a legitimate 501c3 not-for-profit organization and all proceeds from this event will benefit its programs.
