The Guide Dog Foundation to Hold its 23rd Annual “Second Sight®” Bike-A-Thon

Smithtown, NY – Looking for a little exercise, a tour of Long Island’s scenic North Shore, and a way to help people with disabilities? Then come join the Guide Dog Foundation’s 23rd annual Second Sight bike-a-thon on Sunday, September 9, 2012.

Both novice and experienced bikers from all over Long Island will enjoy a day of exercise, food, and friends while supporting the Guide Dog Foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life for people who are blind, visually impaired, or who have other special needs.

This year’s bike-a-thon features routes of Long Island’s North Shore with rides ranging from a family-friendly 5-mile “fun” ride to a challenging 65 miles. All rides begin and end at the Foundation’s Smithtown campus, and the first ride begins at 8 a.m. When they return to the Foundation, participants will be treated to a picnic lunch, tours of the 10-acre campus, and visits with the Foundation’s special puppies.

Registration fees are $50 for an individual; $75 for a family (up to two adults and two children 17 and under). Register by August 31 to receive a free 2012 Bike-A-Thon t-shirt.

New this year – riders will be able to set up personalized fundraising pages to get their families and friends involved. Riders who raise $75 and $175 or more will receive exclusive gifts.

The Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association, Long Island’s largest recreational cycling club, has hosted the Guide Dog Foundation’s bike-a-thon for the past 23 years. Their volunteers will again offer their services to ensure a safe and fun day for all participants. Helmets are required for all riders.
