Good Samaritan Hospital's New Surgical Intensive Care Unit Offers Patient-Focused Care

John Mitty Monday, December 3, 2012

West Islip, NY - Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center were joined by administration, physicians, elected officials and community members at the recent ribbon cutting for the hospital’s new Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). This state-of-the-art 16-bed unit will accommodate trauma patients and surgical patients requiring intensive care. These single patient, private rooms include showers, accommodations for patient’s family as well as the latest monitoring equipment.

“We have responded to patients’ needs by providing greater access to surgical care,” said Good Samaritan’s Chair of Surgery John Francfort, MD.  “This advanced suite will further enable comprehensive care focused on patient safety to make a difference in the community and better serve our patients.”

The hospital is working toward a planned 2013 American College of Surgeons (ACS) site visit and review. If verified, Good Sam will be among the first hospitals in New York State to be named an ACS-Committee on Trauma Level II Trauma Center. As the first hospital in the State to invite the ACS-COT to review its trauma program, the hospital has set a standard of care that the State Department of Health has adopted for all trauma centers across the State.

“As part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to clinical excellence, this unit is a key component of the hospital’s trauma program,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Nancy Simmons.
