Friends of Long Island Raising Money to Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

Four months after Superstorm Sandy, many Long Island residents are still struggling to make ends meet, repair their damaged homes, and get back to their ordinary lives.  A new nonprofit group has formed to try to get some of those people back into their homes, called “Friends of Long Island.”  Friends of Long Island is attempting to raise half a million dollars for 100 people who are still unable to move back into their houses because there are still so many costly repairs to be done before the homes are livable again.

There are government programs in place to help victims of Hurricane Sandy with their home repairs, but depending on the type of damage and the amount, it is easy for homeowners to be rejected for assistance.  For example, one man in Long Beach explained that his home needs to be elevated, a repair costing $75,000.  FEMA declared the home was more than 50% damaged however, which means the man’s only option would be to demolish it or elevate it with money he doesn’t have.  Situations like this can be impossible to resolve without assistance from some other direction.  Friends of Long Island will hopefully be able to fill this gap, enabling residents to return to their homes.
