Food Coming from Virginia Hits Long Island

Since the storm of the millenium hit the shores of Long Island there has been an incredible outpouring of organizations helping with food, clothing, and even rebuilding homes. These massive Long Island relief events have made a tremendous difference in the livelihood of many who have lost a great deal. Now it is evident that the food will continue to pour in from other parts of the country, starting with over 20,000 pounds from western Virginia.

Arriving on a tractor trailer the 20- thousand pounds of food and bottled water backed up to the loading dock at Island Harvest Food Bank in order to help out with what the food bank is doing to help thousands of families. This truck, and food, is a part of the WDBJ7 Home and Away Food Drive that was held last week. Only 18 hours after the truck left Salem, Virginia it was in Hauppauge, New York for final delivery.

That is an incredible mix of food and water. When volunteers in Salem packed the food they mixed a variety of items in each box. All of this food was packed on the truck where there was 26 pallets of food with 24 boxes on each pallet. That's a total of 624 boxes. Each one of these boxes contained non perishable items which Island Harvest, a Long Island food bank, can distribute around to the different communities.

Of course, Island Harvest was excited about the 20,000 pounds of food. "And you know when food like this comes in it excites us because it's already prepared, " said Migdalia Otero, Vice President of Operations at Island Harvest. "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you," she said.

Island Harvest says every contribution is a blessing, every truckload is making a difference in a region facing more difficult days ahead.

The Food Bank has moved as many items in the last three weeks as it normally would see in a couple of months. That might be the new normal around here for some time to come.  As for the food from western Virginia, it should be out in the community by Wednesday night.
