Fifth Alligator Spotted in Long Island River

Earlier this year, four alligators were discovered in Long Island.  The alligators were caught and will be living at the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center where they can be taken care of properly.  A fifth alligator was spotted in the Peconic River on Sunday and reported the same day.  Official confirmed the sighting on Wednesday but say that they are still searching for the missing reptile. 

How did an alligator get into a river on Long Island?  Presumably it was an illegal pet.  Alligators cannot survive the harsh Long Island winters, so when alligators are abandoned by their owners like this, they are in danger of losing their lives.  This is why a Reptile Amnesty was hosted earlier this year, so that owners of alligators like this one would have a chance to turn in their pets without consequences.  Unfortunately, the owner of this alligator did not see fit to turn in his pet, and now the alligator is in danger.  Hopefully the reptile will be found soon and will be able to join the other four at the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center, where it will be able to live safely in a controlled environment.  If you spot the alligator, be sure to give local officials a call.
