“Catch of the Day – Fish and Fowl in Greater Bridgehampton”

The first of two summer exhibits will be opening at the Bridgehampton Historical Society’s Archives building on Friday, June 15^th, at 5pm.

For thousands of years first Native Americans and then new arrivals from Europe sustained themselves harvesting the bounty found on and near the shoreline. Over the last one hundred and fifty years or so, harvesting increasingly became a commercial enterprise. Whales for oil and bone, eels, clams and oysters, and feathers and meat from wildfowl all became important cash crops for many East Enders. Using art work from the Hoie Foundation, tools hand wrought by local blacksmiths, and carvings by local artisans, this exhibit celebrates the history of harvesting fish and fowl in our area.
