Brentwood Deli Owner Defends Store with Machete

A masked gunman entered into the Stop & Shop Deli on Crooked Hill Road in Brentwood on September 25^th, but he didn’t leave with the cash.  After firing his .22 caliber pistol, he ordered the 24 year old deli worker on the scene to give him the cash in the cash drawer.  Instead of complying, the worker grabbed a machete from under the counter, and within seconds, he pushed open the gate and charged straight at the would-be robber.  The robber took off through the door, and the deli worker chased after him, swinging the machete, until he ran away. 

While the store owner, Elena Alvarado, was grateful to the employee, she told NBC 4 New York that she would have preferred that the employee had not taken such brash action.  “You can make money again, but not your life,” she explained.  The robber has still not been apprehended since he escaped the Stop & Shop Deli.  He was wearing a black athletic shirt with white stripes, dark pants, and sneakers in black and white, along with a gray mask.  Police in Suffolk County are asking that anyone with information on the incident call the hotline at 1-800-220-TIPS.
