Artists Reception: Rosalie Dimon Gallery Featuring Sherry Schreiber & Alfred Fayemi - March 3

John Mitty Tuesday, February 12, 2013

(RIVERHEAD, NY, February 13, 2013) –– East End Arts is pleased to announce the Artists’ Reception for the exciting new art show at the Rosalie Dimon Gallery, at the Jamesport Manor Inn (located at 370 Manor Lane in Jamesport, NY) featuring East End Arts members: tapestry artist Sherry Schreiber and Nigerian-born photographer Alfred Fayemi. The Artists’ Reception will be held on Sunday, March 3 from 3 PM to 5 PM at the Rosalie Dimon Gallery, where the public will have the opportunity to meet the artists. Local wines and artisan fruits and cheeses will be served. The public is welcome to this free event. Additionally, the Jamesport Manor Inn offers a Fireside Prix Fixe the night of the reception at a cost of $25 per person. This show opened on Friday, February 1, 2013 and will be up for viewing until May 1, 2013. For more information, visit http://eastendarts.org/gallery/DimonCurrent.html.

One could say that Sherry Schreiber’s tapestries are paintings woven in yarn, though they are experienced in a more alive and luminous way than paintings. The multitude of colors and textures of the yarns and the uneven quality of hand-spun linen offers a special effect, whether it is grass in a field or waves on the sea. The many points of color combine differently when viewed from up close than they do from a distance. At close range they are perceived as a textile design. Standing back one senses light, space and distance. The fact that Ms. Schreiber has lived in so many beautiful places around the world has been an ongoing source of inspiration over the course of many years. Each piece, impressive in its depth, depicts places around the world with sensitivity and subtlety.

Alfred Fayemi’s photographic experience spans 45 years. He devoted much of this time to documentary photography of the peoples of sub Saharan Africa for which he traveled to 20 countries. He authored and published three books of his works: Balancing Acts: photographs from West Africa, Voices from Within: photographs of African Children and Windows to the Soul: photographs of African Women. His photographs have been published in magazines and have been used in books and book covers. His recent works consist of fine art digital painting: usually digitally altered black and white photographs that progress and evolve to mixed media collage using primarily fabrics with African motifs. He draws inspiration from the myriad colors, patterns and textures typical of African clothing. Mr. Fayemi is a noted speaker on African children and women and has lectured in elementary and high schools and several colleges. He has exhibited widely and internationally in over 40 solo and many more group exhibitions. His works can be found in many private and public collections.
