5 Injured in Rail Collision on Long Island

Two trains collided in Westbury Tuesday in a Long Island Rail Road commuter collision.  During the accident, one train rear-ended into another around 11 a.m., and five people were injured.  Thankfully nobody was killed during the collision.  Neither of the trains were derailed, and the train tracks themselves were not damaged, which should make it easy to get service re-established and traffic moving through the area again.  The two train operators were both injured and were taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment.  Their injuries are not considered life threatening.  The other three people who were injured refused medical attention and left the scene without treatment.  The incident was minor overall and should not affect transit for long.

Service has already been partially restored to the area, and trains are moving between Mineola, Hicksville, Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma again.  By this evening, LIRR has announced that they expect the train schedules to return to normal.  Your commute home from work should be unaffected unless you will be leaving the office in the next couple of hours, in which case you may or may not experience delays depending on where you are headed and when you arrive at the station.
